The Golf Course

Stone Tree, located just south of Owen Sound, offers a challenging round of golf for the more accomplished golfer, with some narrow tee shots and challenging greens. Yet our course is not overly long and offers generous landing areas that will appeal to players of all abilities.

The surrounding countryside is covered with hardwoods and conifers and we are surrounded by wetlands. We have some natural grasses, "the rough that frames the edges of our fairways."

No. 1 – Easy Street, 301 yards, Par 4

This short, comfortable par 4 provides an enjoyable, uncomplicated start to your round. Keep an eye out and you'll see the "Stone Tree" from which our course gets its name.

The tree appears to jut out of a rock formation on the left side of the fairway 50 yards from the green. A mid-to long iron or fairway wood off the tee, followed by a short iron approach shot should be ideal. The green is relatively flat with some subtle undulation and it drops off in the front. You don't want to be long on this hole.

No. 2 – The Bear, 615 yards, Par 5

No sooner have you just gotten started than you are faced with the toughest hole on the course, so named because bear prints were found here in the snow a few winters back. Depending upon the pin placement, you are looking at as much as 615 yards from the tips, with a sweeping dogleg left that wraps around a swampy marsh area. You need three great shots to reach this green. Try to keep your second shot on the left-hand side. Watch out for a water hazard in front of the green, the most treacherous on the course because it slopes back to front sharply. Try not to be long, because anything over the green is a tough up and down.

No. 3 – Remedy, 377 yards, Par 4

After surviving No. 2, you'll know why they call this one "Remedy." It's just what the doctor ordered, a shorter par 4 with a forgiving fairway. Be aware of the approach shot. Anything hit past the middle of the green will probably run off the back.

No. 4 – Maple Sugar, 359 yards, Par 4

A short but tight par 4, No. 4 puts a high priority on you hitting an accurate shot off the tee. Try and keep your ball short and right of the beautiful maple trees on the left and you might have a good shot at birdie.

No. 5 – Energy, 191 yards, Par 3

This is a fairly demanding par 3 where club selection is essential. The teeing area is shielded from the wind, which makes it difficult to select the proper club. Take par here and go quietly to the next tee.

No. 6 – Escarpment, 406 yards, Par 4

You'll see some beautiful scenery on this hole, the most picturesque on the golf course. Look for a view of the Niagara Escarpment, a limestone ridge off to the left. Unless the wind is in your face, a 3-wood off the tee is your most likely choice because of the water hazard that cuts into the left side and pinches into the landing area of your drive.

You'll also want to lay back behind the pond that guards the right side. Your approach shot is to a saucer type green forcing the ball to collect toward the middle.

No. 7 – Little Dog, 299 yards, Par 4

Don't let the length of this shorter par 4 deceive you. It requires a rather demanding tee shot that is best accomplished with a long iron or fairway wood. You'll be faced with a difficult approach shot with a short iron to a small turtle-backed green that slopes away on all sides. Once you play this, you'll appreciate the subtlety of this tricky hole.

No. 8 – Simplicity 127 yards, Par 3

This may be the shortest par 3 on the course, but don't expect it to be the easiest. One look from the tee and you'll think there's nothing to this hole. But once you get to the green, that's where the fun starts. The many undulations on the putting surface ensure that this is a hole that yields fewer birdies than expected.

No. 9 – Boomerang, 395 yards, Par 4

From tee to green, this is just a difficult hole that will require every bit of your skill to navigate it correctly. You'll need a well placed tee shot, followed by an accurate short to mid iron approach shot to the green. Once on the putting surface, however, you're in for a roller-coaster ride. A rolling green makes it difficult to hole putts of any length. If you make four here, you've probably picked up a shot on the field.

No. 10 – Gauntlet, 447 yards, Par 4

This straightaway, fairly narrow driving hole is the longest par 4 at Stone Tree. Depending on pin placement you could be faced with a bruising 477 yards from the back tees. Beautiful mature trees frame the fairway on both sides and you're usually looking at a tee shot that is against the wind. Your best bet is driver off the tee and a long iron into the green.

No. 11 – Not Enough, 223 yards, Par 3

This hole could also be called "Into the Wind" because it's almost always necessary to take an extra club. The longest par 3 on the course, you're faced with a forced carry to the green and only a narrow opening on the front right corner if you want to run it up. Most players bail out to the right and pitch to the green.

No. 12 – Cedar Grove, 531 yards, Par 5

This par 5 is pretty straightforward and doesn't require anything special until you get to the green. It doesn't matter whether it's your third shot or you go for the green in two. It's a difficult target to hit, because the green drops off sharply on the left and the right sides. You'll probably have to play our course more than once to really get a handle on how to attack this green.

No. 13 – Turtle Nest, 416 yards, Par 4

A great par 4, No. 13 will surely test all of your skills at the tee. A long, accurate tee shot is mandatory for success on this hole. Once again, precision is required for your approach shot. The name was derived from a nesting turtle found a few years ago in the right green side bunker.

No. 14 – Balnar's Bluff, 421 yards, Par 4

We hope you brought your camera, because if you haven't, you'll wish you did. Balnar's Bluff, named after the owner of the golf course, is the most picturesque hole on the back nine. The bluff is a rock limestone formation about 150 yards from the green that is set down in a cutout area. You'll be hitting from an elevated tee where you can see the entire fairway.

The green is wider at the front and narrow at the back, and if you have the misfortune to hit a pin position at the back, then your approach shot will be more difficult. Be careful because long is dead. Shots to the left and right sides of the green also have a tendency to kick sideways.

No. 15 – Bunker Road, 272 yards, Par 4

The shortest par 4 on the golf course, this hole can be one of the easiest or it can frustrate you to no end. Big, accurate hitters may be able to drive the green, but it is only possible if they avoid the numerous bunkers that guard the fairway.

And then, even if you hit the green off the tee, don't expect an automatic birdie, because the green is worthy of much more respect than it is given, it is the largest green on the golf course.

No. 16 – Railway Siding, 172 yards, Par 3

Named after an old railway line that runs through the Stone Tree property, this par 3 has a nice look to it and is bunker free. From an elevated tee, you'll want to avoid the grassy hollow which is short and to the left. The green slopes a little off the back down into an area that would require a difficult uphill pitch, you don't want to be long. Club selection is critical on this hole. Relax and enjoy yourself because No. 17 will require all your attention and focus.

No. 17 – Water Snake, 533 yards, Par 5

And you thought you had already played No. 2 – this long dogleg left is a reflection of that hole. The formula is simple: length, accuracy and a great mind. Many opt for a 3-wood off the tee for accuracy, because anything to the left or right is in the hazard. A long hitter can cut the dogleg and have a pitch shot to the hole, but most golfers will hit a third shot of about 110 yards to the hole. You'll need all your focus here to keep the ball in play and get your par. There are no bunkers around this green, which slopes to the right and causes pulls to break more sharply than you would think.

No. 18 – Memory, 171 yards, Par 3

Unlike most golf courses, the last hole at Stone Tree is a wonderful par 3. Framed by trees and a rock ledge backdrop, this is the type of finishing hole that will make you savor your round. The view and the experience of playing this picturesque finishing hole will likely bring you back for more.
